Description

Unlike Chinese art, Western art did not grant autonomy to the landscape until quite late; for a long time, it merely served as a backdrop to heroic or pastoral scenes. As an independent subject, landscape reached its golden age in the 19th century, particularly with the rise of Impressionism. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the genre underwent profound transformations—both stylistically, driven by successive avant-garde movements, and iconographically, as landscapes were increasingly shaped by industrialization.

In response to this evolution, this groundbreaking exhibition is designed as a sweeping thematic journey, drawing from the rich and diverse collection of the Centre Pompidou, ranging from painting to installation, cinema, and new media.

The seven sections proposed across two galleries explore the myriad ways in which the natural and urban environment have been depicted from 1905 to the present. Viewed from various perspectives, these depictions of the landscape reveal the unique character of the modern and contemporary landscape.
